Modelling green hydrogen storage as liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC)
To prevent global warming from exceeding 1.5°C from pre-industrial times, the energy transition must happen as a matter of urgency. Internationally, hydrogen is positioned as an excellent renewable energy carrier. Hydrogen is green if it is produced by means that do not emit carbon dioxide, such as renewable electrolysis. Due to its low density and boiling point at standard pressure conditions, hydrogen storage is challenging. Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are typically cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that can store hydrogen through hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions. LOHCs reach satisfactory gravimetric densities and can be stored at room temperature. The UROP consists of modelling the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation of the methylcyclohexane-toluene system with an emphasis on ensuring proper thermal management of the reactor.
